First - observe your body shape
- Stand in front of a large mirror, and just have a look at your overall body shape.
- Focus on your shoulders, waistline and hips.
- How do they line up? Where are your widest and narrowest parts?
Whichever body shape you are – congratulations!
We all have things we might not like about our body, but it’s the only one we have… so try and focus on the positive parts! What’s your favourite thing about your body?
Is your Body Shape… Remarkable Rectangle?!
Also called: Ruler, Column, Banana or ‘H’ frame.
If you’re Rectangle Shaped, your primary features are:
- Straight shoulder line
- Less waist definition
- Straight hips and bum
- If you put on or lose weight, it will likely be an even distribution
The Rectangle is often slimmer than other body types, and of course in our modern fat-phobic world this translates to most women as the most desirable. We hear things like – “You’re so lucky, you can wear anything!” Unfortunately, that’s a pile of poo. Nobody can wear everything, and no body suits every style.
What looks great on you?
Skirts with volume-increasing details like ruffles, bows, pockets or embellishments.
They fill out your hips and balance your upper body.
The good news is that clothes tend to fit you better than other types, as a lot of the industry standard is based around this body type. The exceptions would be if you are very tall or your bust is very small, as this veers from the expectations of ‘normal’. But who wants to be normal, eh?!
You can get away with the straight line silhouette, with simple clean lines and surrendering the waist line altogether, which will really work for some of you. Generally though, you will want to create shape, especially around the middle, by defining the waist and filling out curves on the bottom or top – so you can wear looks that puff out at the shoulders or hips. Shapeless, baggy clothes should be avoided.
On the bottom, you can go from cargo pants with thigh pockets, to skinny jeans, to a full on flare, and the big pleated skirts on trend now are perfect for enhancing those curves. Try a belted jumpsuit that draws your eye toward the waist detailing, or those boyfriend jeans you’ve had your eye on.
Scoop neck tops, ruching and gathers can all be carried off with style, and look for A line dresses for a perfect overall silhouette – if you’re feeling adventurous, even try a peplum and some shoulder enhancement… some of those eighties looks will work for you girl! Think big and bold with shoulders, sloped sleeves, frills and pleats.
